Social Determinants of Health | PBS12

Directed, produced, filmed and edited by Rob and Chelsea Jackson for PBS12

30 minutes | 2023

When you consider how, when, and why you get sick or deal with certain health conditions, are factors like socioeconomic status, access to education, and neighborhood taken into consideration? If not, the impact might be surprising.

The latest episode in the “Decode Colorado” series on PBS12 digs into the health care landscape in both urban and rural Colorado to understand the social determinants of health. Follow the stories of Casey, Rosalyn, Sofia, the Woodham twins and more  to see how social determinants impact their health and what programs and solutions are available to improve their well-being.

Filmmaker Notes: Rob and Chelsea directed and filmed this television show with a blend of video journalism and documentary techniques. We worked at numerous locations in and around the Denver Metro Area including in downtown Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, East Colfax and Park Hill, among others. For the rural stories, we travelled to Julesberg and Sedgwick in Northeast Colorado. Principal photography included cinéma vérité, aerial cinematography and b-roll, as well as a wide variety of interview setups ranging from extremely minimal using only natural light to more well-lit with Aputure lighting, diffusion, modifiers, grip, etc. Special thanks to Casey Capper for allowing us to spend a day with him as he showed us around and discussed some exceptionally challenging life experiences, as well as to Winning Couiffures, Sedgwick County Health Center, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, Denver Health, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Saint Joseph Hospital, The Colorado Health Foundation and Colorado Access for working with us to share their expertise while we filmed and documented at their locations. This topic and most of the others we cover for PBS12 are especially sensitive in nature and we are impressed and inspired by all the people who are willing to put themselves out there on camera with the hope of others being able to benefit from hearing their experiences, knowledge and advice. Chelsea’s official roles were Director and Editor while Rob’s were Producer and the Director of Photography, with some overlap as usual, in what was a tremendous collaboration between the project’s courageous and generous on-camera participants and our small production team.
